Smithy’s Droughtmasters was established in 2017 by Coralyn and Rowan Smith. Looking towards the future, our stud aims to focus on breeding animals with good temperament, structural soundness, and the ability to adapt to different environments, whilst maintaining all the attributes that the Droughtmaster breed was developed for – efficiency, growth, fertility and ease of calving.
Our herd is split across four properties outside of Warwick in southern Queensland. Our home property consists of rich black soil country, which is primarily used for weaning and bull sale preparation. Our breeders are on agistment about 20 minutes from home on light, sandy country. We are currently running 70 breeders, but are slowly increasing as we retain females that meet our selection criteria, or as we purchase heifers to improve our genetic diversity. We also run a herd of 40 IVF recipients.
Smithy's Droughtmasters was founded on genetics from Double X, Truvalle and the Warwick High School studs. We were fortunate to purchase the breeding herd of Claidan Park Droughtmasters when they dispersed, which included bloodlines from Billabong, Greenacres, Glenavon and CMC. Through additional heifer purchases and our inaugural stud sire from Yarrum Droughtmasters (Yarrum 327), we have a very diverse range of genetics in our herd.
2021 welcomed Locarno Piper to the Smithy's Droughtmasters herd. She was the top priced animal at the 2021 National Droughtmaster female sale in Gympie and set a new sale record. Piper has everything you could want in a droughtmaster female and has become a key IVF donor. She has produced numerous high perform progeny.
